Save Currumbin Ltd is a Not for Profit public company limited by guarantee whose community Objects are in its Constitution.
We represent the community of and visitors to Currumbin and Tugun area who want to preserve our unique vegetated cliffs and village feel from overdevelopment.
Currumbin-Tugun is unique to the Gold Coast for its village feel, vegetated hills, cliffs and ridges that bring tropical rainforest and its animals to an iconic family friendly beach. As one of our late great Currumbin Resident’s Dell Stone said- ‘Currumbin brings the bush to the beach’. Dell was a lioness for Currumbin and had to bring legal action to preserve the escarpment. Now her family other residents and Save Currumbin continue the struggle to preserve its uniqueness. It is the site of world renown Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The lorikeets feed on the surrounding green vegetated hills and ridges. Cover Currumbin Hill and its ridges with 7-level concrete towers like that proposed at 776 Pacific Parade Currumbin and the birdlife and animal life will suffer- See Environmental Report of the danger posed by development along Pacific Parade.
Residents, visitors to Currumbin Beach, community and environmental groups do not want our beach suburb to go the way of other strips along our coast. The Ridges & Significant Hills Overlay Code is supposed to protect Currumbin and Tallebudgera but all too often its not enforced as it should. Infact, Council adopt their own Practice Note (which is not the law) of assessing height ‘in a vertical plane’ that development companies leverage to gain excessive height outcomes by leveraging the very slopes that are meant to be protected. It’s a travesty. See the expert reports about just how bad council got it wrong on 776 Pacific Parade Currumbin.
We do not want to lose our green vegetated cliffs and the animals that depend on them to high rise apartment complexes that ruin amenity and take scarce public car parks to one of the most popular beaches in the country. See report on how bad the development at 776 Pacific Parade Currumbin is in terms of killing our uniqueness/public amenity so essential for tourism.
Be empowered to make a difference by supporting our thoughtful well-reasoned community campaigns backed by expert opinions. Individuals seem powerless against big money and its insatiable greed for taller and more dominant concrete towers.

No council money is being spent to protect the environmental corridors like those in Currumbin from development. What’s worse is some council planners appear to be blinkered or pressured when it comes to the public interest to not listen to the community but bow to development companies by allowing overdevelopment through and on top of our vegetated cliffs that will destroy habitat and wildlife feeding grounds and corridors.
We all expect council to be gatekeepers of the public interest and enforce the Ridges & Significant Hills Overlay Code. All too often development companies say a few pot plants on balconies will be enough to undo the damage their concrete towers do to the natural vegetated slopes they carve up and build in front of. Don’t let them get away with it. The community doesn’t have the resources to constantly fight every DA of overdevelopment. Council has to be held accountable to do right by the community and the environment and not give lip service to the codes. They are not umpires of an unfair fight between deep pockets and voices of families who want Currumbin to keep its unique family and village feel.
We expect them to be gatekeepers of the community interest and administer the laws accordingly.
That’s why we have to sue when they get it wrong and approve overdevelopment. Councilor’s cannot be held impotent before the onslaught of developers millions and an indifferent bureaucracy.
Anything that so obviously dominates the Currumbin Hill escarpment and obliterates public amenity from the beach to the green ridgeline must go through the higher scrutiny that Impact Assessment brings. Whether that’s by a proper interpretation of the 3-storey building height maximum or proper assessment within code rules that a 7-storey megalith that eats into and obliterates a big chunk of Currumbin Hill ought only to proceed by way of impact assessment.
Even as Code they could have so determined but they didn’t. They made a mistake unfortunately. The Council is also inconsistent- refusing (rightly) the DA at 780 Pacific Parade(MCU201701607) – that was much lower than that proposed at 776 Pacific Parade (OTH/2025/79) but then approving 776- 5 metres taller than the approved 780 Pacific Parade development! This results in a built form some 8.5 metres to 14.6m or more above the height of the vegetated ridge behind (approx. RL17.7m AHD maximum to RL11.6m AHD minimum).See Report of expert Town Planner Jake Storey
Town Planning mistakes cannot be fixed just because people write a letter to the editor or hold up placards. Saving Currumbin takes experts and that takes money to pay for lawyers, barristers, town planners and scientists input to hold council to account through the courts and keep Currumbin safe from overdevelopment for generations to come. See What’s New for details of the court action the community has been forced to take to Save Currumbin.
That’s why we need your help. Every little bit helps.
Please help us to stop the Southern developers ruining our unique green spaces and ridgelines.
