We represent the community of and visitors to Currumbin who want to preserve Currumbin’s unique vegetated cliffs and village feel from overdevelopment.

Currumbin is unique to the Gold Coast for its village feel, vegetated hills, cliffs and ridges that bring tropical rainforest and its animals to an iconic family friendly beach . It is the site of world renown Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Gold Coast City Council [GCCC] has invited community consultation on proposed changes to the City Plan. But we only have two weeks to make professional written submissions not only on what’s wrong with those proposed amendments but also what’s wrong in the current City Plan such as the ridiculous 15 metre building height overlay that some developers try and convince the Council trumps 3 storey limits demanded by the community and ignores the Ridges and significant hills protection overlay code.

Residents visitors to Currumbin Beach community and environmental groups do not want our beach suburb to go the way of Palm Beach which has seen rampant over development or become a Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach high rise late night adult entertainment  bar and restaurant precinct.  We have enough venues to cater for residents and tourists who come to Currumbin for family holidays. We do not want to lose our green vegetated cliffs and the animals that depend on them to high rise apartment complexes that ruin amenity and take scarce public car parks to one of the most popular beaches in the country.

Read the Reports from the town planning experts, the visual amenity experts, the ecology and environment experts which incorporate the pleas from our indigenous community to save Currumbin from overdevelopment and desecration of the spiritual places on Currumbin Hill and the wildlife that lives on its vegetated slopes and ridges.

We see this as an opportunity to make comprehensive and professional submissions to GCCC in ‘town planning speak’  to preserve Currumbin’s green, low rise and family friendly character. Recent 15 meter height rules have seen developers try and ‘push the envelope’ and slip through 6 storey apartment complexes that ‘tower over Pacific Parade footpaths like intimidating fascist edifices and gouge out huge sections of Currumbin Hill behind and destroy its vegetation and animal life and scar the once beautiful natural and distinctive landscape.

In every Gold Coast ratepayers invoice there’s a Open Space Levy. Yet no money is being spent to protect the environmental corridors like those in Currumbin from development. So a City Plan that allows 15 metre overdevelopment on top of vegetated cliffs that will destroy habitat and wild life feeding grounds and corridors must be changed as there is nothing else being done to protect our unique flora and fauna.

Poorly conceived Town Planning policies for Currumbin come from the ‘one size fits all’ approach of planners who do not differentiate between built up entertainment precincts like Broadbeach and green village feel Currumbin when it comes to the local laws generally or Neighbourhood Centre zone codes in particular. Town Planning mistakes or poor policy decisions by politicians cannot be re-written just because people write a letter to the editor or hold up placards. That did not save Palm Beach. As the Lord Mayor said they had their chance to make submissions on the then City Plan but didn’t do so.  Saving Currrumbin  takes money to pay for expert town planners and scientists input and publicity to garner community support to lobby politicians via social media etc to keep Currumbin safe from overdevelopment for generations to come.

That’s why we need your help. Every little bit helps. Please lobby the politicians to adopt the changes and hard wire Currumbin protection in the laws the community wants before next year’s Council elections. Save Currumbin  Will your family help us today to save Currumbin for generations to come?

We do not want to go the way of Palm Beach. Currumbin is a special place.
