Currumbin Green Bridge

By reason of the recognized Fauna species listed in the Report this area provides valuable connectivity and habitat corridor for animals moving between Northern Currumbin Hill and the heavily vegetated areas around Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary all the way out to Cobaki Lakes and the Currumbin Valley consideration ought be given to the movement of animals from the Eastern side of M2 to the West.

Do you support the idea that the State government build a Green Bridge of Life (The bridge would not be for vehicles just animals, pedestrians and cyclists) that would go  from Kindara Reserve near the end of Kandara Ave, across the M2 Gold Coast Highway to Currumbin Hill Conservation Park near Thrower Drive entrance?

Consideration can then be given to another similar but smaller green bridge to join Tugun Conservation Area cross Pacific Highway M1 to link that line of Green with Cobaki Lakes and Westward to the ranges. That line would miss a lot of urban development and link Green bio-corridors from the Coast (such as that on Currumbin Hill cliff escarpment) to the ranges.

Currumbin Hill is the beginning of a Critical greenspace habitat corridor from Currumbin Beach inland to the Cobaki  Lakes and the Valley as part of the broader Currumbin/Tugun – Springbrook National Park Corridor.

It would be wonderful for tourism as it would make a wonderful green triumphal arch as a gateway experience for travellers from interstate and overseas driving north from the airport. It could also be a bike and walking track through the national parks. So both animals and cyclists and pedestrians, this green bridge is a great idea.

We understand that Main Roads are in the process of consultation about the expansion of the M1 from Burleigh to the Border and are building a wildlife underpass to connect Burleigh to Springbrook so this is a logical extension of that project.

 From our Community’s perspective environmental issues and care for our animals and their habitat must balance out all development including public infrastructure. To that end we have been asking the government to consider green bridges across major highways such as M1 and the Gold Coast Highway as vital coast to hinterland green corridors.  This to our mind, is more important than just getting ticks on a sheet with the ISCA( The Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia).

Who will speak for the voiceless animals?

The ISCA is a mechanism for driving sustainability outcomes in infrastructure during the planning, design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has partnered with ISCA to identify sustainable opportunities and the project will submit a formal sustainability verification by ISCA at the completion of design and construction phases.

TMR wants to achieve Sustainability Accreditation but they need to do MORE. They need to build Green bridges or else all the talk about ‘continuity’ ‘biodiversity’ and ‘green corridors’ from the hinterland to the coast is meaningless and ‘government speak’.

TMR says they will have community participation and consultation.We have asked the Minister #MarkBailey to consider Green Bridges over both Pacific Highway (M1) and Gold Coast Highways at Currumbin/Tugun and so await his response.

  1. Excellent idea. More wildlife bridges and connections are desperately needed in this country so if it’s an important wildlife corridor, let’s just get it done
