Which way Currumbin?

Save Currumbin is pleased to announce we are headed in the right direction with the City of Gold Coast amendments to the City Plan in so far as it affects Currumbin.

On 13 December 2019, Council resolved to accept the recommendations of its Planning Department to accept most of Save Currumbin’s Submissions. See Council’s Minutes of 13 December. We understand that Save Currumbin community made the most submissions of any one group on the whole of the Gold Coast in the Our City Our Plan Round 1 consultation. Congratulations to you all for downloading and submitting our proforma submissions. It and our careful diplomacy and advocacy has largely had its desired effect. However, its not over till….Round 2.

We have already made an extensive summary of those recommendations in our earlier Article Round 2 Consultation Our City Our Plan 6 Jan – 4 Feb 2020. In that arrticle you will find links to all the relevant information including Attachment D to the 4 December Report which will form the basis of the recommendations for Round 2.

Because Save Currumbin Submissions were different to the advertised amendments proposed by Council in Round 1 (and indeed in so far as the Building Heights and Late Night Precinct was concerned, were radically so), Council is obliged pursuant to Minister’s Guidelines and Rules Under the Planning Act 2016 [MGR]) ( see too Guidance for MGR) to re-advertise and have another round of consultations and submissions on those substantially different amendments, we as a community have to step up one more time and say yes to these changes for Currumbin (i.e. height restrictions to [12M (3 storey) and no late night precinct along Pacific Parade]. Naturally we will reiterate our endorsement but will advise you all in January if there is a need for the community to download and send in individual endorsements in another proforma. We understand there will be a public meeting (‘Town Hall’) somewhere on the Gold Coast (probably Currumbin RSL in January. As many of you as can should attend to show Council that we are committed to preserving Currumbin’s uniqueness and to protect it from overdevelopment endorse the proposed amendments but demand more is done later in 2020. Look for advertisements by Council and this website as well as our social media pages for more details.

Unfortunately the balance of Save Currumbin’s submissions on the protection of Currumbin’s vegetated cliffs the wildlife on them and the cultural significance of them to our traditional peoples cannot fit into the Round 2 agenda. However we understand it may be considered in future amendments to the City Plan. We have to keep up the pressure to make sure that it does. We are, in any event, lobbying the State Government on those issues as well and will continue to do so. In that regard the fight continues. We have almost won the first battle but there is more to do to hold the line of development at Currumbin Bridge. Together we can say to the powers that be and those nefarious white shoe brigade that would seek to influence them: ‘overdevelopment “shall not pass” Currumbin Creek’.

(Overdevelopment) You shall not pass!

We take this opportunity of wishing you and your families a blessed and Happy Christmas. We shall keep you informed in 2020 as we continue to #savecurrumbin.
